_Helmut Schmidt-Rhen, moiré pattern from his Museum Morsbroich (Leverkusen) poster (1961)
I’ve been attracted to moiré patterns forever. But over the last few years I’ve tried incorporating randomness into some of the graphic and pattern work I’m building with code, to avoid things looking too sterile and to create additional visual interest. The screens in Schmidt-Rhen’s mechanical are not highly-precise chessboard patterns, and he cut the three background pieces slightly off-kilter. The result is a pattern of moiré that behaves a little unexpectedly. I reproduced those irregularities in my code (Python in DrawBot). The original is below:galerie123.com
