I’m a recovering political theorist turned graphic designer and design researcher and writer. I study constructed scripts and pattern-making as parts of a larger exploration of typographic representation and algorithmically-defined formal systems.

My book on the methods and principles of constructed scripts, What can be letters, what letters can be, will be published with Itemzero in the fall of 2026. I’ve also been investigating the archives and cataloging the script designs of the postwar Dutch designer Jurriaan Schrofer, and reconstructing his designs as digital fonts. That work will eventually become a book, too.

I’m presently an assistant professor of graphic design at Iowa State University, where I teach typography, design ethics and theory, and computational design. I also teach basic creative coding workshops with Python and DrawBot.

(When I was a scholar of politics, my interests were political epistemology and deliberation, and I taught courses in the history of European and US political thought, ethics and public policy, US government and politics, news media and politics—and my favorite, a course I called ‘Truth, lies, and politics’. I really do miss teaching that one.)

I’ve presented my work and research for Robothon, ATypI, TypeCon, the Cooper Union’s Lubalin lecture series, the Letterform Archive, Letterspace Amsterdam, AIGA’s national conference, and Automatic. I’ve also contributed book and type reviews to Typographica and Fonts in Use.

When I’m not working, I’m usually reading, running, or trying to become a better photographer.
