_Bridget Riley, Hidden squares (1970)
I’ve always thought of Bridget Riley’s (1931–) work as being much more than op-art—which it is, of course; but there’s a compelling confidence and groundedness to her prints and paintings that keeps it from feeling showy. In this piece I imagine Riley playing with the relationship between figure and ground. Transforming the shapes from squares to circles and vice versa as the animation does reverses their relationship in the field, but also makes the level of contrast at the ends of the transition (I think) a bit more of a surprise.
